Lake Palestine Dive Search

Last Tuesday, 9-year old Samuel “Cade” Castleberry drowned in Lake Palestine
(south of Tyler, TX). After several fruitless days of searching, the Game
Wardens in charge called upon us at ALERT to do a shore line search, using
our hard-bottom inflatable rafts (with 25-hp Mercury outboards). We left
Friday morning and completed a shoreline search before diving for a brief
bit. We then came back today in force. Captain Dankers (our ESO
instructor/officer) is in charge of the Longview Fire Department Dive/Water
Rescue team and he brought a few of them down, so we had about 20 divers and
were able to do some pretty effective (but unsuccessful) searching today. We
will be returning tommorrow morning and hopefully will find the body.
The visibility is extremely limited (between 2 feet and zero visibility), the
bottom is fairly hard, and the temperature ranges from 45 degrees F to 55
degrees F. Pretty cold. The bottom is relatively clean, a few trees, rocks
and logs but its not trashed. I got to dive yesterday and today and will
probably continue tommorrow. Pretty exciting!
